Bear Cages

Bear cages are used to line up pile or pipe sections prior to welding. For pile line up they are in most cases, operated in combination with an external lifting tool (ELT). Installed on top of the ELT they hold the, previously installed lower pile in such a way that the bevelled pipe end is at mid height of the bear cage. The weld-on pile section is inserted vertically in the open bear cage and, after closing the bear cage, welding can be carried out through gaps in the bear cage sleeve circumference. Bear cages are also used to tie pipe lines together, in case the whole operation takes place horizontally.
The bear cage consists of two hinged sections. Opening and closing is done hydraulically by means of double acting cylinders. Upsets can be provided to adapt the bear cage to different pile diameters.
